Visitors to Yellowstone National Park take in the northern end of the Norris Geyser Basin earlier this month. The geyser basin ranks among the hottest parts of Yellowstone, with temperatures in most of its thermal features above the boiling point. Norris also holds the record for the hottest recorded in the park, a scorching 459 degrees measured at a depth of almost 1,100 feet below the surface in a scientific drill hole.
