A stone cross shown Thursday, Sept. 23, 2021, marks the location in northwest Wyoming's Bridger-Teton National Forest where the remains of Gabrielle Petito were discovered September 19 near Spread Creek. Gary Rider, a friend of Petito's stepfather, James Schmidt, told The Independent they visited the site and created the memorial on September 22. Rider also said that a larger cross about 50 yards away and closer to the river, "was not done by anyone connected with the search or recovery of Gabby.”
