A lone pronghorn antelope grazes on a hilltop in late April on the National Elk Refuge. It’s curious to see pronghorn on the refuge in early spring as most have only just begun migrating back to Jackson Hole from their winter habitat near Pinedale, about 150 miles to the southeast. This could be one of a few stragglers that missed last fall’s migration and stayed behind. If that was the case, he was lucky — the mild winter and lack of snow on the valley floor was a significant contribution to the animal’s survival.
