The Grand Prismatic Spring at the Midway Geyser Basin is one of Yellowstone National Park's most striking thermal features. The feature is about 300 feet in diameter and contains water that is a scorching 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Among the earliest known description of Grand Prismatic were from fur trappers who made saw a "boiling lake" while travelling along the Firehole River in 1839. In 1871, the Hayden Geological Survey visited the spring and noted it contained red, yellow, orange, green and blue colors — all the colors dispersed by an optical prism.
